Contrary to initial assumptions the experimental colonies did not make two separate colonies, instead the ants of both colonies congregated on one side of the foraging arena, and formed one colony of twice the intended size, and then continued with their normal foraging routine. Because the experimental group did not compete with each other the hypothesis was rejected.
